Employee Stole, Resold $40M of Yale Med Computer Equipment

An administrator at Yale's University's school of medicine admitted in court Monday (March 28) that she stole millions of dollars from the school by purchasing $40 million or more in computer equipment through school accounts and secretly reselling it for her own profit.
For years, Jamie Petrone, lead administrator at the medical school's emergency medicine department, was authorized to purchase computer electronics without approval as long as the purchases were below $10,000. At least as early as 2013, she ordered, or instructed her employees to order, equipment in amounts below the $10,000 threshold and then arranging its sales to businesses.
She spent the stolen money on personal expenses, including cars, real estate, and travel.
Yale had received an anonymous tip that Petrone was "ordering suspiciously high volumes of computer equipment, some of which was placed into her personal vehicle," according to government court filings. An investigation showed that Petrone had drafted thousands of purchase orders below $10,000 since 2018, at an estimated value of "tens of millions of dollars," federal prosecutors said.
