Computer Science, Engineering Job Ads Increase in November

The number of online job ads increased by 35,400 for computer scientists and mathematicians in November, according to the Conference Board, and online postings for engineers and architects rose by 2,600, that category's first monthly gain since July. The 8.6 percent gain for computer scientists and mathematicians was one of the bright spots in the Conference Board's report, which also found that the cohort of unemployed science and engineering job-seekers generally declined.

The Conference Board also constructs a ratio of online job ads to the number of unemployed workers in the various categories. In October, there were more than 2.5 computer scientist or mathematician jobs for every unemployed person looking for work. The Conference Board also found that the number of unemployed computer scientists and mathematicians looking for work dropped by nearly 33 percent, to 159,400, while the number of online ads increased by 7,500.

Overall, the number of online job ads for all categories increased by 106,500 in October to about 3.4 million openings.
