In addition to our main panels, there are were really exciting break out sessions going on at CFP. A session on new technologies that protects privacy will explained how some software developers are challenging the notion that you have to sell an individual’s data in order to survive on the Internet and implementing privacy by design.

Privacy advocate Steve Greenberg, Guardian Project researcher Hans-Christopher Steiner and the developers of a surveillance-resistant email system, Shazzle Mail, presented on how to regain control of your information in 2013's data-driven eco-system.

Shazzle Mail is even free to individuals. Its strategy is to build its brand by word of mouth and charge corporations that pick up the service.

Advocates for patient health and victims of domestic violence in the audience spoke about how important this work was for the incredibly sensitive information they handle each day.
