Why Does HPC Matter?

As mentioned in this space yesterday, the 27th annual SC Conference is once again underway in New Orleans, LA (USA). The theme of this year's conference is "HPC Matters," and throughout the week SC14 is highlighting the impact that HPC-enabled science and engineering has on our quality of life and on our understanding of the world around us.

SC14 launched this year’s Monday night gala with a new plenary session to highlight that impact, with a joint presentation by Dr. Eng Lim Goh, Senior Vice President CTO of SGI, and Dr. Piyush Mehrotra, Chief of the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Division. During their presentation, the two highlighted HPC-enabled advancements in efforts in feeding the world through higher-yield wheat crops, saving lives during natural catastrophes such as earthquakes and tornadoes, discovering new planets outside our solar system, and discerning the origins of the universe.

Expect to see more of the HPC Matters program in 2015 and beyond. If you weren't in the New Orleans theater last night to see this inaugural event, look for the lecture on YouTube in the coming weeks.
