Senator the Hon. Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy in Australia's Gillard Ministry, recently announced the 2011 National ICT Careers Week at CeBIT Australia in Sydney. The 2011 National ICT Careers Week will be held from July 25 – 31, 2011.

Under the branding of "ICT: Start Here, Go Anywhere," participating organizations of this year's National ICT Careers Week are encouraged to organize events or activities not only during the week but also throughout the year to showcase the variety of careers available in ICT to young people.

Senator Conroy said, "I spend much of my working life delivering the message that ICT [information and communications technology] and the NBN [National Broadband Network] will change the everyday lives in extraordinary ways. With a career in ICT you can be part of that change."

"It is a career that is both dynamic and fundamental to Australia's future economic and social growth, as we use information communications technology and the NBN to facilitate a more inclusive, more connected community, to drive productivity and Australian innovation."

Penny Coulter, Chair, National ICT Careers Week said, "The demand for ICT professionals will continue to increase in the next decade as technology underpins more and more of our business and lifestyle outcomes.

"ICT is about working with people, solving problems, finding solutions and making a difference to peoples' lives."

Philip Callil, President of the Victorian IT Teachers Association (VITTA) said, "We have proudly supported the National ICT Careers Week since its inception four years ago. During the careers week this year we have many exciting events planned, with a major event at Federation Square in Melbourne on 27 July that will include an ICT Careers Expo, workshops and seminars for students and a showcase of innovations in ICT and education. VITTA will also host an ICT Bus Tour for teachers to showcase the diverse range of ICT careers available to students.

"These activities are designed to encourage young people to consider a career in ICT. ICT can offer an exciting and fulfilling professional career all over the world."

In 2011 over 80 participating organizations will host events across Australia to demonstrate the value of ICT careers and the opportunities available to young students with an ICT qualification.
