Job seekers are taking unusual steps to distinguish themselves in a market with higher than 9 percent unemployment and nearly 14 million unemployed as of July. James Meeks of Atlanta set up a website, HireMeAccenture.com, to catch the eye of his dream employer: consulting giant Accenture. Another candidate brought in homemade cookies along with her application. "Her effort was positively noticed and helped to get her an interview," says FlexJobs.com CEO Sara Sutton Fell, albeit not the job.
Some unconventional strategies can backfire. One job seeker showed up at the offices of a targeted employer every day for two weeks. He'd ask to speak with different people each day, then sat in reception hoping someone would come out to meet with him. That played more creepy than creative.
Unfortunately, there can be a fine line between what's acceptable and what's unacceptable when it comes to finding a job, so beware.
