When Carol Spradling was an accountant in the early 1980s, she would spend days, sometimes weeks, on a calculator doing cost allocations. Her life changed when she saw a new computer application that could do the work in seconds.
"I was so intrigued and became enamored by computers," says Spradling. As a computer science graduate student, she bought the new IBM personal computer. IBM published a monthly magazine that included the latest offerings from programmers and computer enthusiasts, which she completely absorbed.
Spradling, an associate professor of computer science and information systems at Northwest Missouri State University, was recently named the recipient of the university's 2012 Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Spradling developed several computing courses since joining the faculty in 1988, and is fresh off a two-year planning process that culminated in a Women in Computing conference earlier this month. The issue is dear to Spradling. "We're trying to help women learn they have a voice in the field they're going into," she says.
