The number of women working in the information technology (IT) field is expected to increase through 2020 as IT becomes pervasive throughout organizations, according to CEB. As marketing departments, finance departments, and other business units seek more workers with computer skills, the IT workforce is expected to increasingly diversify. In addition, research shows companies with an equal balance between male and female employees are more successful than those that are less diverse.

To recruit more women to IT roles, CEB recommends advertising job vacancies as widely as possible, expanding the search outside personal networks. Companies should ensure their selection panel is as diverse as possible and candidates are interviewed by more than one panel member.

Women also are less likely to stay in an IT role than men, and a lack of work flexibility is a crucial factor in women's decisions to leave a company. A CEB study found when female managers report dissatisfaction with workplace flexibility, only 17 percent planned to stay in their role, and workplace flexibility was found to directly correlate with productivity. "We want to see women self-advocating for whatever flexibility they need to stay," says CEB's Kris van Riper. "You can call it negotiation, self-advocacy, but it is about not being afraid to ask."
