Hedge funds are flirting with the idea of using quantum computers in an attempt to give their analysis a speed boost.
Two Sigma, Renaissance, DE Shaw, and WorldQuant are all experimenting with quantum computing systems, according to the Financial Times. It quotes the CEO of controversial quantum computing firm D-Wave as saying that the company has had "a lot" of conversations with hedge funds and banks.
Hedge funds often try out emerging technologies and approaches — from machine learning to crowdsourced coding — to find out whether they can make an extra billion.
"We have been exploring quantum computing because we're interested in new computing paradigms," says Alex Wong, managing director at DE Shaw. "We're interested in any technology that has the potential to leapfrog existing approaches, particularly if it can surpass both the speed and reliability of traditional computing."
