Jun Pan, a 12-year-old boy, was staring at the CodeCombat video game on a computer screen. He needed to avoid shells from left and right and outrun monsters from behind to pass a character dressed in chainmail.

Instead of using arrow keys, the game requires players to write Python or JavaScript to direct the character's movements, so Pan ran the 60 lines of codes he had written and his character started running zigzag. Then, he found the way out.

CodeCombat, developed by a startup educational gaming company in San Francisco, aims to teach students coding by having them support their game play using Python, JavaScript, Lua, and CoffeeScript. The game is part of a compulsory course in eight public middle schools.
