Amazon has agreed to pay for computer science training for teachers at every high school in Paterson, N.J., under an initiative designed to expand students' opportunities for technology careers.
The Paterson Board of Education approved a revised resolution authorizing the Amazon Future Engineer initiative. In addition to the computer science training for teachers, the program will provide online tutoring and mentoring by Amazon engineers for Paterson students, district officials said. Students in the program also will be eligible for Amazon internships, the district said.
Paterson Assistant Superintendent Eric Crespo said the Amazon grant will give city students resources "rooted in the 21st century."
The Amazon Future Engineer grant will pay for services provided by Edhesive, a for-profit online computer science training group. The initiative is designed to encourage students from low-income communities to pursue careers in computer science, officials said.
