Punjabi University's Computer Science Department has set up a research center to develop technologies for the differently-abled.

The center will help give impetus to technology projects that aim to solve problems faced by the differently abled, whose needs often remain unrecognized, says Vishal Goyal, professor and coordinator for the research center.

Goyal has also been working on Indian Sign Language (ISL) machine translation projects for the hearing impared. He and Lalit Goyal, an associate professor at DAV College, have developed a software-based system that translates simple English text to ISL synthetic animations, and are working on translating complex and compound sentences, as well as multiword expressions.

The software will help convert any English video into sign language animations and can be deployed as a teaching and learning aid for the hearing and speech impared.

"The project will become an effective tool to communicate in terms of academics, for teaching hearing impaired people, making public announcements in ISL, and preparing course contents in ISL to assist differently abled students in academics," Vishal Goyal says.
