'Curiosity' Gets the Best of Computer Science Students
The SSCC students' one-quarter scale replica of the Mars Curiosity Rover was displayed at the Wilmington Public Library.
Southern State Community College computer science students recently built a one-quarter scale replica of NASA's Mars Curiosity Rover. Professor Josh Montgomery says the students' "passion project" involved "hundreds of hours of work."
Students Mary Mundt and Jake Williams commenced construction in May. The replica is made out of aluminum extrusion beams, steel, and 3D printed parts.
"There are 10 servo motors that control the movement of the rover," Mundt says. She also "designed a part to mount the 'face' of the rover," an LED matrix panel that projects different emotions "such as angry, happy, etc.," she says.
The idea for the project emerged from a comment Mundt made to Montgomery last spring.
"I found an amazing project for one of your students—a 3D print of Mars Rover," Montgomery recalls her saying. He said in reply, "Yes, that is an amazing project for you to build."
