Thirteen of the world's top 20 universities in computer science are based in the United States, according to the results of the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2019. Computer science is a booming field, and demand for specialized talent has skyrocketed more than 400 percent since 2010.
The ARWU rankings classify the best universities in a number of academic subjects, including computer science. The category includes a number of specialties such as computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, data architecture, and hardware architecture.
ARWU's assessment methodology is based on six objective indicators, including the number of articles published in journals, the relevance of these articles (by number of citations and relevance of the publication), the level of internationalization of the universities, as well as the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
U.S. universities featured prominently in the 2019 university ranking, earning a majority of spots, thirteen. The U.K. maintained the two universities, as it had in 2018. Singapore also maintained two spots in the top 20.
