Microsoft Sacks Journalists, Replaces Them With AI Software

MSN will use AI to rewrite headlines and add better accompanying photographs or slide shows.

Dozens of journalists have lost their positions after Microsoft decided to replace them with artificial intelligence software.

Around 27 PA Media employees who maintain the news homepages on Microsoft's MSN website and its Edge browser — used by millions every day — were told they would lose their jobs in a month's time after Microsoft decided to stop employing humans to select, edit, and curate news articles on its homepages.

"I spend all my time reading about how automation and AI is going to take all our jobs," said one team member. "And here I am — AI has taken my job."

Many tech companies are experimenting with using artificial intelligence in journalism, with the likes of Google funding investment in projects to understand its uses, although efforts to automate the writing of articles have not been adopted widely.
