Tech Workers Are Starting to Worry About Their Career Prospects

Some tech workers are starting to worry how to develop their careers if they are always working from home during the coronavirus crises.
Covid-19 and flexible work schedules have had a greater impact on workers in tech than in almost any other sector, according to the 2020 Hays Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Report. It found that almost two-thirds of tech professionals say they expect to have more opportunities to work flexibly in future, compared to less than half of professionals across all sectors.
But some concerns are appearing about the impact of remote working on career development. While 61% of tech professionals say they do not believe that flexible working limits career development, that belief varies greatly depending on their seniority.
There is a "fairly stark disparity" between those more senior and newer entrants to the workforce regarding the impact of flexible work on career progression, says James Hallahan, director of Hays Technology.
Those worried about their ability to advance in their careers while working from home see a problem in their inability to spend time with managers and colleagues to learn new skills, or to understand different parts of their organization which could provide new opportunities.
