WITF and affiliated PBS stations in Pennsylvania will broadcast "Family Night: Coding," on Thursday, December 10, to mark Computer Science Education Week. The hour-long program will share information on 21st century skill-sets and demystify coding, making it fun and easy.

"It is essential for Pennsylvania's learners to have access to computer science early on in their education," says Acting Secretary of Education Noe Ortega. "Programs like 'Family Night: Coding' create opportunities for families to experience all of the exciting things computer science has to offer and help to prepare a new generation of commonwealth residents for the jobs of tomorrow."

Designed for kindergarten to fifth graders, the event will introduce basic principles of coding through hands-on activities and games. Throughout the program, viewers will hear from experts on the paths they took to pursue a career and find a job in computer science. Segments will feature computer scientists from Tesla Inc. and explore career opportunities in the fields of virtual reality gaming, theatre, graphic design, and agriculture.

"Our message is that 'anyone can code,'" says Debbie Riek, WITF director of education. No coding experience or computer is required. "But have paper and pencil handy to make computer science magic happen," Riek says.

The program premieres Thursday or can be livestreamed at witf.org/watch. It will be available on-demand through the PBS Video app.
