Dutch hacker Victor Gevers was interrogated by Dutch police for accessing the Twitter account of U.S. President Donald Trump in October. Public prosecutors are investigating whether Gevers' actions involve any criminal activity.
Gevers gained access to the President Trump's Twitter account by correctly guessing the password "MAGA2020!" The President's account had not enabled two-step verification.
Gevers said he did not abuse access to the account, though he did try in as many ways as possible to inform the President and those around him that the account was poorly secured. The White House denied the hack. Twitter, too, has dismissed the incident.
The ethical handling of information gained through hacking, called responsible disclosure, requires the hacker to inform the account holder of the breach in a timely and correct manner.
Gevers is chairman of the Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure, which voluntarily searches for security holes in digital systems.
