'Everyone Can Benefit': HBCU Adds Coding Program

Norfolk State University, with the support of Apple and other historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), will add a coding curriculum for all students and create an educational technology center for local schoolchildren and adults.
NSU will become a Community Center for Coding and Creativity, part of the national initiative led by Tennessee State University. The project is aimed at expanding educational opportunities for students of all ages in hopes of diversifying the tech workforce.
Apple is donating computers, iPads, and other equipment for an on-campus lab for students plus professional development sessions for faculty. The company also has provided curricula on how to teach coding and app development.
Lab setup and faculty training are ongoing. By fall, the university hopes to offer two new classes: one a coding course in the computer science department, the other an app building course in general education.
