In a controversial move that would impact the quality of engineers produced in the country, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has made mathematics and physics optional for students who wish to pursue technical courses like biotechnology, textile, or agriculture engineering at the undergraduate level.

The courses remain mandatory for most engineering subjects like computer science.

In a handbook released last week, the AICTE changed the eligibility criteria for undergraduate admissions. The move has come under strong criticism from academics who say mathematics is a foundation for all engineering degrees.

"Without physics and mathematics . . . our future engineers will not be able to do proper engineering and will adversely affect innovation," said Rita John of Madras University.
