Warning on AI: Staff 'Hired and Fired by Algorithm'

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has warned about what it calls "significant gaps" in U.K. employment law over the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said workers could be "hired and fired by algorithm," and that new legal protections were needed. "Without fair rules, the use of AI at work could lead to widespread discrimination and unfair treatment," she said.
The TUC describes its concerns in "Technology Managing People – The Legal Implications."
As AI becomes more sophisticated, the fear is that it will be entrusted with "high-risk decisions" without human intervention such as analyzing job performance, figuring out who should be in line for promotion, or let go.
