Students From Around the World Compete in Virtual HackPSU
The pandemic did not stop 644 students on 45 teams from around the world from participating in a virtual version of HackPSU earlier this month. Teams were required to complete several challenges over 48 hours to compete for prizes and bolster coding skills.
HackPSU is Penn State's largest student-run hackathon and attracts participants with all skill levels to create change by developing technology to solve real-world problems. This year's workshops and entertainment events saw a lot of engagement, said Anastasia Vopelius, a data science major and co-executive director of HackPSU. "In addition, we had a large number of beginner hackers and hackers with no experience, so it was really great to see them being active and displaying interest in hackathons and the tech world."
The competition's first place team, from Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, New Delhi, India, created an app to help users increase personal productivity online. The second place team, from Penn State and Northeastern University, Boston, created an app that allows teaching assistants to create online waiting rooms. The third place team, from Mizoram University, Aizawl, India, created an automated speed controlling system for drivers.
