Trust in the technology sector is rapidly declining around the world, hitting an all-time low in 17 of 27 countries surveyed, according to the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer.
In the U.S., tech saw the biggest decline compared to other sectors, falling from the most trusted sector in 2020, to ninth place in 2021, Edelman says.
While tech was the most trusted sector in 20 out of 22 countries in 2016, it is No. 1 in only seven countries in 2021.
Tech has played a critical role in keeping people connected during COVID-19 lockdowns, but it's also been a source of misinformation related to the virus, preventative measures, and vaccines. Trust in search engines declined 6% in 2021, and trust in social media declined 5%, Edelman says.
