The Creative Embedded Systems course at Barnard College bridges the worlds of art and computer science. A mixture of lab and lecture allows students to explore embedded systems as a way to build a final creative project, a moving kinetic sculpture.
The course requires students to document their work through posts on GitHub and a class course blog. On GitHub, students create posts that give a technical view of their work, while the blog provides a nontechnical space to share visual updates of their work.
The class "gives students an opportunity to practice both of these skills in tandem and realize there are different ways of talking to different sorts of people," says Mark Santolucito, assistant professor of computer science at Barnard. "That's a huge part of life outside of the computer science major and undergraduate world."
