A meteoric rise in the number of active software developers brings the current worldwide total to around 24.3 million, a report says.

That's a 14 percent increase from October 2020, according to 20th edition of SlashData's State of the Developer Nation report, a survey involving more than 19,000 developers in 155 countries.

The report identifies JavaScript as the most popular programming language, used by almost 14 million developers around the world. More than 4.5 million JavaScript developers have joined the ranks between Q4 2017 and Q1 2021. This is the highest growth in terms of absolute numbers across all programming languages.

Next up is Python with just over 10 million users, followed by Java with 9.4 million, and C/C++ with 7.3 million.
