AI Pioneer Raj Reddy Receives Computer History Museum Fellow Award

Raj Reddy, University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, received the 2021 Computer History Museum Fellow Award at a virtual event on Thursday (June 24) for his life's work on artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer science education.
Reddy developed the first system capable of recognizing continuous speech, and his research team developed many of the concepts underlying modern commercial speech recognition technology. Reddy received the ACM A.M. Turing Award in 1994 for his pioneering work on the design and construction of large scale artificial intelligence systems.
In his acceptance speech at the Computer History Museum event, Reddy reminisced about growing up in a village in India without water or electricity or doctors. The first time he wore shoes, Reddy recalled, was when he joined college.
Reddy said he hoped that speech recognition technology would help those at the bottom of the pyramid, enabling them to use spoken dialogue systems to access services such as e-commerce and telemedicine even if they cannot read.
