The four Frees brothers all received computer science degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and now work in the field.
Jeffrey Frees, the oldest of the four, earned a bachelor's degree in 2008 and a master's in 2010, and was chair of the UAB student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. He works at a global information technology consulting firm.
Eric Frees is a software engineer at a construction software firm, and Stephen Frees works for an avionics analysis firm.
Many assume Jonathan, the youngest and system programmer at a research lab, chose computer science because of his brothers. Jonathan says he first explored other options before joining the CS program. "There is an elegant beauty to the way things are done in computer science," Jonathan says. "There's always something else to learn. You are never stagnant in that."
