More developers are using Java 11 than Java 8 in production, according to the JVM Ecosystem Report 2021, marking a shift from earlier surveys which showed developers sticking with Java 8.

Forty percent of respondents report using more than one version of Java, with 61.5% using Java 11, 59.9% using Java 8, and 11.7% using the latest release, Java 15.

"The mantra that most Java developers are comfortable staying on Java 8 seems to be slowly breaking apart," says the report, which was prepared by Snyk.

In addition, 44% of developers use the free AdoptOpenJDK distribution in production as one of their JDKs and 48% use it in development.
