A meta analysis of 317 high-quality studies with a combined sample size of 51,437 college students found significant advantages for flipped classrooms versus traditional lecture in terms of academics, interpersonal outcomes, and student satisfaction.
The research is described in "To Flip or Not to Flip? A Meta-Analysis of the Efficacy of Flipped Learning in Higher Education," published in the Review of Educational Research.
The researchers compared three types of academic outcomes: foundational knowledge, higher order thinking, and professional academic skills (the ability to code, for example, if it's a coding class). They found marked improvements in each, however, the greatest gains were in the professional academic skills.
Partial flipped classrooms — in which some but not all material followed the flipped model — outperformed both traditional lecture classes and fully flipped classrooms.
