Six New Barbie Dolls Celebrate Women of Science
Professor Sarah Gilbert's Barbie doll shares the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine co-developer's long auburn hair and oversized black glasses.
Oxford University professor Sarah Gilbert, who helped lead the development of the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and last month was given a damehood, has a new accolade: a Barbie doll made in her image.
Gilbert is one of the six women Mattel has recognized as role models in the fight against COVID-19. Gilbert said she found the recognition "very strange" but hopes it inspires other young women to work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers.
Other honorees are U.S. health care workers Dr. Audrey Sue Cruz and emergency room nurse Amy O'Sullivan, Canadian doctor Chika Stacy Oriuwa, Brazilian biomedical researcher Dr. Jaqueline Goes de Jesus, and Australian doctor Kirby White.
"I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of girls into STEM careers and hope that children who see my Barbie will realize how vital careers in science are to help the world around us," Gilbert said.
