White House Seeks to Plug Cybersecurity Job Hole

The White House held a cybersecurity summit with business leaders in the tech, finance, and energy sectors on Wednesday (August 25) in what was described as a "call to action" for the private sector to shore up its cyber defenses.
The Biden administration is looking to industry to partner on strategies to combat the threat, which will require many more cybersecurity workers. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates about 500,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in the U.S. as of May 2021.
The majority of cybersecurity jobs require a four-year degree in computer science at present, and that's a problem because computer science "is still not widely accessible to students in K-12," creating a pipeline problem, said Tennessee Tech University Professor Ambareen Siraj.
Creative alternatives to the college pathway into the profession should be considered, said Todd Thibodeaux, president and chief executive officer of the Computing Technology Industry Association.
