O'Reilly's 2021 Data/AI Salary Survey reveals that 64% of technology workers took part in training or obtained new certifications in the past year to build upon their professional skills, mostly to solicit a salary increase or promotion. The average change in compensation over the last three years was $9,252 — an increase of just 2.25% annually.
Data and AI professionals hold a clear desire to learn, with 91% of those surveyed reporting that they're interested in learning new skills or improving existing skills. "Given the shortage of qualified employees in fields like data science, machine learning, and AI, companies that are serious about building out their workforces must invest in learning and training to grow this talent internally," says O'Reilly President Laura Baldwin.
The average salary for AI and data professionals is $146,000, according to the survey, which polled 3,136 respondents. Professionals who use the Rust programming language have the highest average salary (over $180,000), followed by those who use Go ($179,000), and Scala ($178,000). The highest salaries were associated with the tools H2O ($183,000), KNIME ($180,000), Spark NLP ($179,000), and Spark MLlib ($175,000).
Salaries remained the same over the last three years for 18% of respondents.
