Computer Science Scholarships Focus on Tribal Nation Building

The University of Oklahoma has received a U.S. National Science Foundation grant to fund scholarships for indigenous students interested in tribal nation building and computer science.
An interdisciplinary team was awarded nearly $1.5 million for a program focused on creating pathways to STEM disciplines.
Over its six-year duration, the project will fund scholarships up to $10,000 per year to 23 full-time students who are pursuing bachelor's degrees in computer science. The first round of scholarships will be awarded in spring 2022. Eight scholarships will be available in the first year of the program, with an additional 15 scholarships available during the second year.
This project will help the university institutionalize structures that could form sustainable pathways to computer science for indigenous students, said professor of computer science and principal investigator Deborah Trytten.
