U.S. Funding Will Create Openly Licensed Computer Science Textbooks

OpenStax, a developer of free, openly licensed textbooks, has received funding from the U.S. Department of Education to create textbooks for computer science courses. The nonprofit will work with 12 collaborators on creating three openly licensed textbooks. The group will also develop digital resources and instructor training.
The $1.13 million DOE investment comes from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, which supports technology upgrades at community colleges, provides grants to make college more affordable, and expands access to open textbooks.
OpenStax is working with the Consortium of Open Resource Educators (CORE) on the project. CORE, which includes the Association of American Colleges & Universities, numerous colleges and universities, as well as industry collaborators Google, HP, Intel, and zyBooks.
The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 30, 2024.
