Program Pays Those With STEM Degrees to Become Teachers

Detroit and Dearborn public schools in Michigan will pay young graduates or mid-career professionals with STEM degrees to go back to school to become teachers.
Those who enter the Metro Detroit TRUE (Teaching Residency for Urban Excellence) Project at Wayne State University agree to teach for three years in Dearborn public schools or Detroit public schools.
The program will help participants get a master's degree in education and their teaching certification in 18 months. Participants will receive a $40,000 living stipend and participate in a one-year residency. Participants will receive mentoring throughout the program and for two years after graduating.
The program is part of a federal Department of Education grant to recruit more qualified science, math, engineering, and technology teachers for middle and high schools.
