Cyber Chiefs Try New Tricks to Attract Talent

Businesses are also interested in candidates who aren't necessarily from straight cybersecurity backgrounds.

Cybersecurity and risk executives are using non-traditional means to attract talent, including seeking candidates without degrees or technology backgrounds. The change in tactics occurs as workforce demand exceeds supply, with about 2.72 million additional cybersecurity workers needed worldwide, according to the International Information System Security Certification Consortium,

"We give people the opportunity to come in to learn about the business, to learn about our technology and to apply what they know, such as transferring skills from other areas into security as well," says Steven Babb, chief information security officer at Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.

Help desk technicians can be suitable for cybersecurity positions because they are able to manage ambiguity and tackle real-time problem-solving, says Shaun Marion, CISO at McDonald's. Online gamers are also good candidates, given the need to work odd hours, cooperate, and think quickly, Marion says. "I search for attitude and aptitude and lay security training on top of that," he says.
