AI-powered drug discovery company Absci opened a research center in New York City last week to help attract talent.
Absci founder and CEO Sean McClain estimates that there are about 150 AI researchers worldwide who have the exact skill set in AI and biotechnology that his company requires.
Unable to compete with Google and Meta on compensation, McClain must sell potential recruits on the idea that they will be working on cutting-edge research. He also hopes that researchers will be attracted to and find inspiration in the idea of being part of the AI lab's "founding team."
Absci chief business officer Nikhil Goel notes that Microsoft was once considered a "sleepy company," but changed its image by creating Microsoft Research Lab, which helped it "attract the best Ph.D. students from all the top universities."
