Employers Will Keep Monitoring Software on Workers When They Return to the Office
Demand for employee tracking "bossware" remains high, companies say.
Employee monitoring software that was quietly introduced as a short-term remedy for managers to keep tabs on workers when the pandemic emptied offices is becoming the new normal white-collar workers return to the office.
Surveys of employers show that white-collar workers will be subject to sophisticated spyware that logs keystrokes and mouse movements, captures screenshots, tracks location, and even activates webcams and microphones.
At the same time, workers have been dreaming up creative ways to evade the software's all-seeing eye.
Activity trackers generate a "productivity score" for managers, viewable through an online dashboard. Advocates say it's a way of looking after employees, rather than spying on them.
