AI Will Help Older Adults' Participation in Research
Algorithms will help predict the best tailored approaches to engage research participants.

A study by Florida State University researchers addresses the challenges of recruiting and retaining older adults to participate in research.
The study, published in The Gerontologist, is part of a broader effort to use artificial intelligence-based approaches to encourage older adults to participate in research. The study identifies four "motivation clusters" among older adults for research participation: brain health advocates, research helpers, fun seekers, and multiple motivation enthusiasts.
"Previous guidance on how best to encourage older adults to participate in research has been one-size-fits-all," says FSU Associate Professor of Sociology Dawn Carr. "Our research finds that older adults' motivations are varied and complex."
AI approaches help predict the types of motivational messages that might resonate and keep participants on track, but also the right time to deliver those messages, says co-author Walter Boot. The study is laying the groundwork for the further use of artificial intelligence, he says.
