Jonathan Kennedy Sowah founded the company InovTech STEM Center to teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to students and teachers across Ghana. Sowah dropped out of school to learn robotics, and later started the CREATECH creative technology club, whose members taught themselves and each other robotics skills; the club eventually morphed into the InovTech STEM Center.
The company partners with the Ghana Educational Service to procure robotics kits and work with schools.
Sowah also is committed to closing the STEM gender gap through his company's "STEM for Her" outreach program, and a "Girl Power Workshop" launched last year. "We wanted to introduce girls to the exciting part of robotics, for them to meet those people that are already in the industry doing robotic or tech-related careers, and then mentor them, teach them, and then guide them," he says.
