Tech Firms Urged to Keep Women Safer Online
Half of adult Internet users support further online safety measures, with more women in favor than men.
A study of online lives in the U.K. reveals that women are less confident about their online safety than men, more negatively affected by discriminatory, hateful, and trolling content, and feel less able to have a voice and share opinions online.
Ofcom, the U.K. government regulatory body that conducted the study, is calling for technology firms, who build the sites and apps used by millions of people in the U.K., to act now to make the online world a safer space for women and girls.
U.K. women spend more than a quarter of their waking hours online (4hrs 11min) — around half-an-hour each day more than men. But for many women, life online is not always a positive experience.
The report includes detailed research into the harms people encounter online, and data that shows women are more likely to experience them than men.
