Researchers at Oregon State University have trained a support vector machine, a supervised learning model, to predict the toxicity of proposed pesticides to honey bees based on the compound's molecular structure.
Ping Yang, E. Adrian Henle, Xiaoli Z. Fern, and Cory M. Simon describe their work in an article accepted for publication in The Journal of Chemical Physics.
Pollinators of many fruit, nut, vegetable, and seed crops, bees' global economic impact is annually estimated to exceed $100 billion.
"The model represents pesticide molecules by the set of random walks on their molecular graphs," says graduate student Yang.
