Student From Ukraine Solves Quantum Optical System Problem

Ukrainian Nazar Pyvovar, a recent graduate of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, has simplified a difficult mathematical problem to further illuminate the behavior of two-level quantum optical systems when they interact with a laser beam.

Pyvovar was still in Ukraine in December 2020 when he reached out to his advisor, professor Lingze Duan, to inquire about extracurricular research opportunities. Duan assigned him a theoretical project on closed-form solutions to integrals and differential equations. The result "was nothing short of stellar," Duan says.

Their research is published in the Journal of Physics Communications.

Pyvovar's home city is in Ukraine's east, next to the Russian border. His family left for Germany when Russia invaded. "I had about two months to graduation when the war started, so I had the goal of finishing my degree," he says.

He is now pursuing his master's degree in physics. "My peaceful and joyful life here in the states feel undeserved," he says.
