Fraudsters who exploit LinkedIn to lure users into cryptocurrency investment schemes pose a "significant threat" to the platform and consumers, says Sean Ragan, an FBI special agent.
Scammers posing as professionals have been creating fake LinkedIn profiles and reaching out to other users. Small talk over LinkedIn messaging leads to offers of money making through a crypto investment. LinkedIn is a trusted platform for business networking, and victims say they believed the investments were legitimate.
LinkedIn acknowledged a recent uptick of fraud on its platform. "We enforce our policies, which are very clear: fraudulent activity, including financial scams, are not allowed on LinkedIn," the company said in a statement. LinkedIn says it removed more than 32 million fake accounts from its platform in 2021.
