A study of managers' leadership tactics and their choice of communications channel on staff performance found that charismatic video communication led to higher output than text or audio communication, according to a study published in The Leadership Quarterly.
"The results show a positive correlation between video communication and charismatic communication; the charismatic video led to better performance than the neutral video," says author Petra Nieken, professor of human resource management at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
Remote and mobile work arrangements have lessened opportunities for face-to-face conversation, and digital communication channels offer fewer opportunities to motivate people and show charisma, Nieken says. The study shows that "it's most important for managers to convey a consistent impression when they use the video channel," Nieken says.
