Burned by Layoffs, Tech Workers Are Rethinking Risk

Tech isn't as collegial as it used to be. Widespread layoffs offer a loud reminder that jobs are breakable contracts, not sacrosanct vows.

Over the past few months, thousands of employees have rejoined the job market. So where does tech's talent go from here?

A common thread in the answers of laid-off employees includes a reframing of how "safe" it is to work in tech, and what it takes to jump back into the sector after getting burned.

Aaliyah was laid off from her tech job in the spring. Now she works two full-time tech jobs — neither company knows — and runs a consultancy business on the side. "Never again am I going to put myself into a position where I'm dependent on one stream of income from one company that may or may not do what's in my interest," she says.
