Recent job cuts by tech giants Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are keeping Gaston College computer science student Portia Moore on her toes.

"It's a little disconcerting but at the same time, it is not unexpected," says Moore. She is not too worried about a lack of jobs in her field. She will graduate in May with an associate of applied science in information technology degree.

Instructor Jimmy Warren says employers want people back in the office and sees jobs transferring from cloud providers "back to the local industry and local businesses that need the IT support back on premise."

"Technology is consistently evolving and it's always changing," Moore says. "So even if you don't need as many remote jobs now . . . that doesn't mean two-to-three years from now you won't."
