Widespread layoffs and a possible recession are pressuring workers, and many bosses want employees back at their desks.
Could five days back in the office be far off? "In some companies, they have to," says J. Gerald Suarez, a professor at the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business. "They're not being given a choice."
While unemployment is at a 50-year low, many employers say that company culture, training of new hires, and problem-solving are suffering because of remote work.
In Britain, some companies are offering a premium to employees who are in the office five days a week. "I see that more as a short-term, not a long-term solution," Suarez says. "What people are looking for is a balance between adding value to the company and adding value to the mission." But also, "what about adding value to my life?"
