Thousands of tech staffers at Meta and Google do "fake work" and were hired to fulfill a "vanity metric," says investor and OpenStore chief executive Keith Rabois.
"All these people were extraneous, this has been true for a long time, the vanity metric of hiring employees was this false god," Rabois says. He estimates that Google and Meta had thousands of employees like this. The sector's current mass layoffs are overdue, he says.
Google intentionally over-hired engineers and tech talent to stop them from moving to other companies, Rabois says, calling the strategy "pretty coherent." But it meant engineers would "sit at their desks, and do nothing."
