Meta is paying exorbitant salaries to programmers to turn its vision the immersive digital metaverse into reality. Programmers capable of building out virtual reality-powered games, apps, and technology can earn total compensation from $600,000 to packages approaching $1 million, according to people familiar with the matter.
"It's not abnormal to be $500,000 plus," says Patrick McAdams, chief executive of recruiting firm Andiamo. The highest packages are often awarded to highly-skilled developers or technical team leaders, he says.
The eye-popping compensation packages come amid a push by Meta to rein in costs across the sprawling company. Last month, it announced plans to lay off 10,000 workers. Those cuts follow the 13 percent workforce reduction in November that slashed 11,000 jobs.
